Best is subjective. It very much depends on your needs and what you expect from a media player. For ripping my favorites now are: CUERipper and dBpoweramp. CUERipper is freeware.Dark one foobar player - Search Results.

High fidelity—or hi-fi or hifi—reproduction is a term used by home stereo listeners, audiophiles and home audio enthusiasts to refer to high-quality reproduction of sound to distinguish it from the lower quality sound produced by inexpensive audio equipment, or the inferior quality of sound reproduction that can be heard in recordings made until the late 1940s.

Foobar2000 1.1.10 / Dynamic Range Meter 1. One Direction became the first British band to debut on top of the Billboard 200 list when Up All Night sold over.DBpoweramp is commercial. CUERipper has edged out EAC in terms of usability and functionality. For playback and library management my favorite is JRiver Media Center.
Its library management makes it far more suitable for my needs and expectations than Foobar2000.Foobar2000 is awesome, and I use it for some tasks. But for library management and for most playback I use JRiver Media Center because it is more awesome for my needs.
JRiver Media Center is commercial. Foobar2000 is freeware.CUETools and CUERipper get metadata from MusicBrainz, Discogs, and FreeDB. Very good sources, but different than Gracenote. EAC gets metadata from FreeDB dBpoweramp gets metadata from AMG, MusicBrainz, GD3, FreeDB, and SonataDB (for classical). I use foobar2000 as my player, mostly because it'll play and process just about anything I throw at it.
Plus I'm a long-time user, so it's familiar. If I wanted a music library manager (which I don't) I would use jRiver Media Center. That's what I use to manage my video collection, and it has excellent music collection features and playback options that rival fb2k (ASIO, WASAPI Event-driven, etc.). It costs $40, well worth the investment IMO and its developers do regular updates with new features and bug fixes. For ripping I use both EAC and dbPoweramp, and if I need Gracenote I'll use Nero QuikMedia. For drive-to-drive disc copying, I use Nero Express. For tag handling, I use fb2k for live shows and MP3Tag for everything else.
For audio conversion, I use a new open source program called TAudioConverter (based on ffmpeg). It's the most versatile converter I've ever used, and it will use up to 8 cores on your CPU. When I'm forced to, I use iTunes to manage stuff on my iPhone. In daily use, I just navigate to the music folder, select the files, and in the right-click menu choose 'Enqueue in foobar 2000'. My file manager is Total Commander, and I have shortcuts set up for all my top-level music folders (Jazz, Rock, Classical, Hi-res) so I don't have to mess around with Windows Explorer. I am getting ready to dump Windows Media Center for music playback in a home theater room.
It has some features that I really like: easily controlled via remote and the text on the screen is large enough to read from couch 10 feet away from a 20' display.I don't like to use my projector when I am listening to music because the lamp is expensive. Is it possible to control foobar with a WMC remote or some other remote?
I know I have tried in the past and not had much luck navigating around. I think I was able to move up and down on a playlist that I created earlier. Is there an easy way to configure foobar so that the text on the screen is larger and easier to read?
I tried using the Dark One configuration but some of the options (e.g. Bouncing eq at the top of the screen) were really taxing the small CPU in my media center PC. Perhaps I need to look at JRiver Media Center too. I have/use a few of each. Two of my favorites, for playing strictly audio are foobar2000 and Musicbee, sometimes I also use itunes.
One of my favorite media players is SM player, which also plays just about ANY file, of any type, be it audio or video, on the planet. It will also play from any audio or video disc. A new media player I've just been trying out is Duam Potplayer. (stupid name, great player) For ripping lately I've been using the free version of dbpoweramp. It uses 3-4 different databases. And 95% of the time it's right on the money. I'm NOT 100% sure but I think only itunes uses Gracenote these days. Apple exclusivity maybe?
